We were commissioned by Youth Ministries for Peace and Justice to envision a conceptual design for a new marketplace and public gathering point under the Bruckner Expressway as it rises to cross the Bronx River. 25,000 square feet of underpass is transformed into a multi-programmable setting from food market to skatepark to music venue after hours. A once dark space under the highway is transformed into an ecological landscape in which highway runoff is drained into large rock mounds. Referencing the Japanese miniature garden, the new space is a community place for contemplation and playful enjoyment.
